As a leading steel enterprise in Latin America, Ternium Brazil relies on the stable operation of its blast furnaces and hot stoves to maintain production capacity. This overhaul involved critical areas such as relining, combustion chambers, and domes, demanding refractory materials with exceptional high-temperature resistance, thermal shock resilience, and precise installation. To address these complex operational challenges, we developed a tailored multi-grade insulation material portfolio for Primetals UK, meticulously aligning with the temperature and mechanical load requirements of each zone.
In July 2023, we partnered with Primetals UK Ternium Brazil to deliver a comprehensive refractory solution for the overhaul of Blast Furnaces #1 and #2, as well as hot stove upgrades. Leveraging customized design, rigorous quality control, and efficient supply chain management, we successfully supplied 1,458.609 tons of insulation materials, covering key furnace zones and enhancing equipment performance and longevity.
The project utilized high-density insulation materials across multiple grades—900 Grade (WAM B2), 1250 Grade (WAM 23), 1450 Grade (WAM 26), and 1550 Grade (WAM 28)—strategically deployed based on thermal load characteristics:
Combustion Chamber: Primarily 1250 Grade WAM 23 (107.02 tons) and 1550 Grade WAM 28 (81.522 tons) for balanced high-temperature stability and erosion resistance.
Dome: 1550 Grade WAM 28 (108.768 tons) ensured structural durability against intense heat flux.
Chequer Chamber: A hybrid of 1250 Grade WAM 23 (121.506 tons) and 1550 Grade WAM 28 (46.136 tons) optimized thermal efficiency and maintenance costs.
Special Zones: Critical areas like the Hot Blast Outlet employed high-density insulation (0.141 tons) for extreme-condition sealing and endurance.
1. Phased Delivery Strategy:
Batch 1 (Emergency Repairs): Prioritized urgent repairs with 117.756 tons for the Chequer Chamber and 61.602 tons for the Combustion Chamber, enabling rapid furnace restart.
Batches 2 & 3 (New Furnace Construction & Expansion): Supplied 392.419 tons in phases to support capacity upgrades.
Batch 4 (Supplementary Repairs): Delivered 358.866 tons for detailed optimizations, including 0.873 tons for precise Pilot Burner adaptation.
2. Quality Assurance: Pre-production planning, real-time dimensional checks, and physicochemical testing ensured "zero deviation" compliance. Transparent data sharing with clients guaranteed traceability and risk mitigation.
Customer value: from delivery to long-term trust
Efficiency Improvement: Flexible batched delivery reduces on-site storage pressure and accelerates construction timelines.
Cost Optimization: Graded materials lowered energy consumption and extended overhaul cycles.
Risk Management: Full transparency and quality tracking ensured project success.
"From emergency repairs to new furnace construction, the supplier demonstrated exceptional technical synergy and responsiveness. Material performance fully met design specifications, laying a foundation for long-term blast furnace stability."
This collaboration not only reinforces our leadership in steel industry refractories but also opens new avenues for long-term partnership with Primetals UK Ternium Brazil. Moving forward, we will continue innovating in material technologies, expanding into cutting-edge applications such as hydrogen-based steelmaking and low-carbon blast furnaces, to drive the global steel industry’s green transformation.
